Dr Elizabeth Riley is an accomplished professional providing Counselling, Clinical Supervision, Training and Professional Development and specialises in gender identity and clinical supervision.

Dr Riley works in private practice as a counsellor at West Ryde in Sydney's west.

Gender Counselling

Dr Elizabeth Anne Riley is a Sydney-based counsellor and clinical supervisor specialising in gender identity. Dr Riley has a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, a Graduate Diploma and Masters in Counselling and a PhD titled ‘The needs of gender variant children and their parents’. Having worked with the trans community for nearly 20 years, Dr Riley now provides gender specific support and counselling for children, youth & their parents and delivers professional development in gender diversity for schools, clinicians and other service providers. Dr Riley has 10 publications with another two in press and a couple of book chapters to be published this year. Dr Riley is also media spokesperson on behalf of the transgender community. Appearances include SBS World News, 60 Minutes, Insight, The Project, A Current Affair, Radio National, JJJ & Heads Up. Dr Riley was a founding member of the Australian & New Zealand Professional Associations for Transgender Health (ANZPATH), is a Clinical Registrant of Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), and a professional clinical member of the World Professional Associations for Transgender Health (WPATH).

Specialist Gender Support & Resources for Parents

Through her research on the needs of gender variant children and their parents, Dr Riley has gained valuable insight and in conjunction with her experience in counselling transgender and transsexual individuals has developed a practical co-operative approach for working with parents raising gender variant children.

Clinical Supervision

Dr Riley has been a counselling educator, an academic supervisor coordinator, has written supervision curriculum, delivered supervision training to meet the PACFA training standards and regularly delivers professional development in supervision. Dr Riley is a clinical supervisor for counselling and psychotherapy practitioners for clinical supervision and clinical supervision of supervision (individual and group).

Training

Dr Riley provides professional development & training:

  • for schools where children are undertaking a social and gender transition
  • to organisations where staff require awareness regarding the needs of people and or children with gender differences
  • to health professionals who work with transgender adolescents and youth
  • for counselling practitioners in supervision

Dr Riley has published and presented papers and workshops, both locally and internationally, in the areas of Gender Identity, Supervision, Ethics and Sexuality. Dr Riley is also a sought after presenter and speaker on Gender Identity & Supervision .

Ethics

Dr Riley has written curriculum in Ethics at both Undergraduate and Masters level and has provided professional development in ethics to counselling and psychotherapy practitioners. Dr Riley has been the Ethics Chair for the Counselling & Psychotherapy Association of NSW, the Ethics Chair for the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and was a counsellor, consultant and trainer for the Sydney Ethics Centre for over 10 years.
